Chewing gum is able to neutralize viruses in the oral cavity.
American scientists have developed a chewing gum that can destroy viruses before they enter the body’s cells.
Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania are working on a unique chewing gum that can neutralize viruses directly in the mouth and throat. This could become a new word in the prevention of infections, BILD reports.
The idea arose during the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Henry Daniell and his team created a gum based on plant cells that produce large amounts of the protein CTB-ACE2. This protein blocks the virus before it has time to attach to the body’s cells. In laboratory conditions, such chewing gum reduced the concentration of coronavirus by 95%.
Now scientists are using the same technology to combat strains of influenza and the herpes virus. The new version of the gum has also shown encouraging results in the lab, and plans are underway to test it on humans in the near future.
